Graphic Endeavors

Next event:
Wednesday, May 3, 2017 - 12:00pm to 2:00pm
Registration is now closed. Please check our calendar for related upcoming programs.

Graphic novels have exploded in popularity in the last two decades. Some of this is thanks to cinematic adaptations of popular characters. However, graphic novels aren't all superheroes and crime fighters. Join us for an exploration of acclaimed, award-winning non-fiction and biographical graphic novels that will appeal to:

  • Reluctant or struggling readers
  • Those who wish to improve their English skills
  • Those looking to receive their high school equivalency diploma
  • Or any adult interested in history, culture or the illustrated form!

This course is equal parts educational class and book club, and while it promises to be entertaining and interesting, we still emphasize the educational side of the works.

Registration opens March 14 and closes March 28, with classes this session happening Wednesday afternoons from noon - 2 p.m.

This Graphic Endeavors class will focus on two related works - the Manga Barefoot Gen, by Keiji Nakazawa & Trinity: A Graphic History of the First Atomic Bomb, by Jonathan Fetter-Vorm . Barefoot Gen is a work of historical fiction, based loosely on the author's experience growing up in Hiroshima when when the atomic bomb was dropped. It effectively argues the uselessness of war and shows the human side of conflict, in a way which comic artist Robert Crumb calls " the truth in a plain, straightforward way, filled with real human feelings." Trinity explores the events of the atomic bombing from the American perspective, tracking a course through the creation and subsequent philosophical debate over life lived in the atomic age.

We hope you'll sign up!
